Genesis 2:7
Creation holds many interesting studies, some of which we will get into later. But for now, I want us to focus on this single passage.
If you are familiar with the Creation story, then you know that God basically spoke everything into being. He saw an empty sky and said ”Let there be stars”. He saw bare ground and said, ”Let there be grass”. He saw empty waters and said,” Let there be fish”. And so and so forth.
But when it came to His highest creation, the only one that could willingly of a free will return his love, He “Formed” it with his own two hands. He didn't just say, ”Let there be man”. He stooped over, picked up some dirt in his hands and formed man in his own image. Gods' image could not be spoken into being, it had to be made.
Formed, just as a potter works clay. Formed, with a heart that could freely turn towards him. Formed, with a mind that could comprehend his word. Formed, with eyes to see the wonders of his creation. Formed, with hands to be lifted up in praise. Formed, with a mouth to offer up thanksgiving. Formed for one purpose and one purpose only ; to return to their creator the one thing He desires the most. Fellowship.
And why dirt? Couldn't it have been cosmic cloud dust or something? He could have. But he didn't. For you see, dirt is the only thing that seeds will naturally grow in.(ok, all you scientists out there, humor me)
Knowing the frailty of man ahead of time, God knew there would come a time when “seeds” would be planted and need to grow in this “earthen vessel” called man. The first and greatest seed was that of his Spirit. The second seed, and equally as important, was His word.
And just as God took Adam and placed him in a garden and told him to “cultivate it and keep it”, we too have been given a garden. No not out in the back yard. It's between your ears. What we allow to be planted in our minds will grow and produce a harvest. That's why the Evil Ones attacks always occur in the form of thoughts, ideas, and suggestions. He knows that if he can get the right thing planted in your mind, he has you right where he wants you. Why else would the Bible speak so much about guarding our heart and our mind?
Wrong emotions, wrong thoughts, wrong attitudes don't just disappear over time. If allowed to, they spring up and grow. That's why Paul spoke of not allowing a “root of bitterness”to get in. Now do see how important it is as to what you see, hear, and speak? It's all seeds. And you can't plant bad seeds and pray for a crop failure. It won't work.
It's up to us on an individual basis to pay attention to what gets planted, or pulled up by the roots. Happy gardening.
