A Review of Eyes Wide Open

Christians should not be afraid to embrace popular art.

It is not uncommon to see authors approach worldview of what is than what isn't. In Eyes Wide Open, William Romanowski argues that God in popular culture is a reality. While I believe that God exists in all areas of life, after reading the first thirty-three pages in his book, I will argue on matters that I agree with as well as matters that I disagree with.

I am in favor of his view for Christians to be able to understand and critique the dominant worldview in the mainstream popular art (p. 32). His argument suggests that we should make progress in this area by establishing communities capable of discernment and active interpretation. I believe if Christians wants to see changes for Christ Jesus, they are to be active participants in today's activities circumventing our cultures. We cannot afford to be blinded or ignored what is happening around us. We should observe the times such as what the media is portraying in order to get the attention of its viewers even when we are aware of the devil active involvement in influencing the different cultures. When we are aware of what is going on in today's world, we are equipping ourselves with the knowledge and understanding so that we can go in the devil's camp and use his device against him. We cannot influence secular world if we do not understand it.

At the same time, Romanowski argues on the limitations of Christians who only narrow their views by only catered to Christianized version of mainstream cultures (p. 15). For instance, nothing is wrong if a Christian choose to do so providing that it is only one aspect of his or her life he or she wants to satisfy such as one's spirituality. Romanowski feels it is unattractive while I think it is not. I disagree with him because not all Christians are at the same level to attack and observe everything the world has to offer. Besides, some Christians are more extroverted while some are not, and for the ones who are not so extroverted, there is nothing society can do to change their behavior. It won't happen at least not overnight. If they are bent to serve God in a special way, we have to be appreciative of their behavioral style.

Overall, Romanowski offers much to thing about. His views are worth analyzing for Christian thinking and living.
