Do you sometimes find yourself thinking thoughts that result in feelings of apprehension or anxiety? The Apostle Paul exhorts us to think instead on righteous thoughts. (Philippians 4:8) Did you know that anxiety is another word for FEAR? Fearing the unknown is not uncommon to mankind and at times, I have fallen victim to this crippling emotion, when I allowed concerns about my future or that of my loved ones to overwhelm me. At those moments, I failed to remember, who holds tomorrow: GOD! Our Heavenly Father does not want His children to live in fear at any time and He has already given us what we need in this life to overcome "all" fear: the Spirit of power, love and a sound mind. (1Timothy 1:7) We don't have to be in bondage to fear or fold (i.e. like yielding to sin) when fear tries to invade the peace of God that is abiding in our hearts and minds. But, what are we to do when we are afraid? We are to trust in the Lord! (Psalm 56:3)
The Psalmist David penned numerous types of spiritual songs (psalms) and freely expressed his beliefs and emotions to God. When he feared his enemies, he consistently poured out his heart to the Lord for protection. Because of his confidence in God, David was able to exchange the fear that often times gripped him with his faith and confidence in God to sustain him. (Psalm 3:3-4) Have you ever considered writing a 21st century psalm: your personal spiritual song to God? What a wonderful way to build your confidence in God as you reflect on past victories and how the Lord delivered you or a loved one in time of need or from a dreadful situation. I hope you will be encouraged by the 21st century psalm below:
Fear Not
O Lord, you are my refuge and my Rock! Whom shall I fear? If my enemies surround me on every side, you will protect and keep me from harm and all danger-seen and unseen.
My soul rests in you. My mind resists thoughts of fear and dread. Why does fear and dread come unannounced and try to squelch my peace? What can I do? My soul says be still! Your Spirit speaks to my heart -- words of love that casts (literally expels) out all fear. God's love is greater than my fear. God's love is greater than my enemies. Enemies and fear come and go but God's love is constant and eternal. Selah! (Pause and calmly think of that) Be encouraged and fear not for God's love will rescue you. Fear not -- God's love will set you free. Fear not for with God's love in your heart, you can be strong and will have victory. Grasp the love of the Lord and cast down all fear. His love is perfect - so FEAR NOT!
