Creationism: Why you don’t need science or the Old Testament to prove it’s true

Few Biblical subjects generate more heated debate than creationism; this is true even amongst professing Christians. As I sat down with a Christian brother for a chat on creationism, I realized one doesn't need to study science and fossil records in order to debate; they only need to look to the New Testament to prove what the validity of the Old Testament account.

Creationism: Why you don't need science or the Old Testament to prove it's true

As a Christian should, I opened my door to another Christian I had never met, but trusted in him because he was a friend of a friend, which was good enough for me. He was coming to Dallas for a creationism conference hosted by some of the big names in the field, and so I offered him a room and a meal. In the end he took me up on the meal, but was afraid if he stayed with a strange woman, something might happen. In his own words, “whenever a man and a woman are left alone, something's bound to happen.”

I respected his honesty and he respected my generosity. We chatted away and discovered a good Christian spirit between us, and before long, we acted like age old friends. I told him when the conference was over, to give me a call and I'd take him out for dinner. I didn't have the money to spare, but I did it anyway, keeping in mind a few scriptural thoughts: “ Do not be forgetful of hospitality, for by this some have entertained angels without knowing it. ” (Hebrews 13:2) and “ Do not lay up treasures on earth for yourselves, where moth and rust corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal. ” (Matthew 6:19-20)

Over dinner we talked about political stances we disagreed on, about a mutual Christian friend and how we could help him, and then we gravitated to the creationism conference. We started this conversation at the restaurant and when we sensed we might be annoying other patrons, we left and went to my house for more heavy words.

In the space of the next three hours, we wrangled around the subject of creationism from every scientific point of logic. He talked endlessly about gaps in the fossil record, catastrophic events that took minutes and not years to create geological landscapes, the dinosaurs and sea serpents, and whatever else he could think of. By then, my optic nerves were tied in knots and I had almost gone deaf. For him, this was his ministry and he wasn't going to let go of an opportunity to preach to the choir; “Christians must know this stuff in order to defend their faith!” he stated.

It was in that moment I had remembered what Ray Comfort's observations about Atheism and Islam: we like to make things more complicated than they are. We can talk until we're blue in the face with facts, but if you want to study volumes upon volumes in order to be smart enough to begin to argue your points, chances are you'll still lose the person you're trying to witness to. KEEP IT SIMPLE, STUPID.

One of Ray's better arguments for creation is to point to a building:

“Is there a building there?”

“Yes”

“Well, if there's a building, wouldn't it stand to reason there was a builder?”

“Yes”

Ray is correct; when we witness, we pull everything into the “fight”, including the kitchen sink, and how often do we actually succeed? Most of the times it ends with a polite, “Let's agree to disagree” statement, and we haven't gained any ground for all the exerted effort. We have unnecessarily made the situation complicated when God has given us a simple solution.

When I sensed an opening into the conversation, I used the only book I needed to make my simple points to prove creation: the Bible.

  1. We know from Timothy (1:2) that God cannot lie, and we know from 2 Timothy (3:16) “ All Scripture is God-breathed, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness”. So God cannot lie and His Word can be trusted because it is profitable for instruction; you wouldn't use a book that couldn't be trusted to teach, would you?
  2. Do you trust the accounts of the crucifixion and burial? Christians should resoundingly scream yes because it's a foundational tenet of our faith.
  3. “…When He brings in the First-born into the world, He says, ‘And let all the angels of God worship Him.'" We know the angels worship the Son of God according to the Book of Hebrews (1:6) and we know angels don't seek worship (with the exception of one) based upon John's experiences in the Book of Revelation.

To tie up my argument, I said to him, “You believe in these statements from the Bible, correct?” He answered yes. “Then if you know God cannot lie and the scriptures are given for instruction, what Gnostic knowledge do you possess to claim that overrides God's in terms of the Trinity's account of creation? (Gen 1:26 ‘And God said, Let Us make man in Our image, after Our likeness.' These are plural usage) Revelation 22:18-19 warns us about adding or subtracting things from the Book of Prophecy, but that's such a solid warning I believe it safely applies to all scripture.”

He stopped dead in his tracks for a moment, and realized I had a solid, Biblical argument.

“Yeah, but….all Christians need to know about the fossil records”, he helplessly stammered.

“No, Christians simply need to be able to point to the one inclusive book for all the answers. If you do not trust the account of the creation, how can you rationalize trusting any other part of the Bible?”

He was stumped. In the space of three minutes I had debunked the myth you need to study for years in order to defend the Christian faith. We are warned we may be called at any time to testify to our faith and the hope that lies within us, therefore, wouldn't it make more sense if we took our noses out of science books and buried them in the book we're told we'll have to stand in defense of?

“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” (Hebrews 11:1)

So you use the new testament as "proof" that Creationism is the "truth"? Great. LOL.

It is like using an advertisement for alcohol as a proof that alcohol is great. Of course, that is why it is called and ad.

New testament is no proof for anything. Just belief in it and don't see it as proof. This is where you buddies alwasy go wrong...
