Do I Have to Go to Church to be a Christian?

(contd.)

Page 2 of 2 | «Prev12 Next

Some people say that they don't want to attend church services; they just want to occasionally sit in an empty church to pray. According to the Biblical definition of church, when the building is empty, the church isn't there. The church is (or ought to be) out putting into practice what they learned in the huddle.

But the church is full of hypocrites!

You may be surprised to know that I totally agree with this statement. I would define a hypocrite as someone who preaches one thing, but practices another. I've never met a human being who is not a hypocrite to some extent, present company included.
Here is an analogy from parenting: if you are a parent, are you always able to live up to the standards that you teach your children? Do your values change when you blow it? In my opinion, you will do a disservice to you children if you lower the bar for their behaviour because you occasionally miss the mark. I think that it would be better to admit that you made a mistake, that you confess your sins to God and receive forgiveness from Him, and that you will forgive them when (not if) they make a mistake. (Just make sure that your children receive realistic consequences for their mistakes - just like you do.)

Being a Christian is a life-long journey, and on any Sunday morning there are people in churches who are at various stages of that journey. Some are there because they realize there is something missing in their lives and they are seeking to find that something. Others are there because someone dragged them in against their will. Of the ones who consider themselves to be Christians, some are more Christ-like than others. Some are also trying harder to put their faith into practice than others. There may also be some who have the mistaken belief that they have inherited faith through their parents. God has no grandchildren - every person is individually adopted into God's family. It can (and should) be taught to our children, but faith is not hereditary.

In other words, we are all hypocrites. If you are seeking a church where everyone lives up to God's standards at all times, that church doesn't exist on this planet.

Would you settle for a church that worships a perfect God who was willing to sacrifice His only son to pay for the sins of His adopted children? Christians are not perfect, just forgiven. Come join us. There is room for another hypocrite.

Karen, GREAT ARTICLE, sister. Thanks for giving the truth. I loved the analogy to parenting. That's a good one. And...we need each other...that is what is great about church.

But what about the passage in the Bible, I can't remember it exactly or where it's at but I'm pretty sure it's in there.. Well, it says something about people who worship alone in the privacy of their own bedroom are more "true" (or something along those lines) rather than going to church to show off how much of Christian you are. I always found that interesting and I really believe you don't have to go to church to be a Christian just for the simple fact that not every Christian CAN go to church. Not every Christian is surrounded by other Christians. So.. They're not Christians because no one around them is? That sucks and I don't believe God would damn those people just because they can't worship with another person.

To Anon,
I think the verse you are referring to is Matthew 6: 5 -6: And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, (a reference to the Pharisees of the day) for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men... but when you pray, go into your room and pray to your Father, who is unseen." This verse is about being a show-off like you said. It isn't about worship. I don't really know the answer to your question about a Christian living where no other Christians are. The thief on the cross beside Christ who repented of his sin was forgiven, and Christ told him "This day you will be with me in Paradise." That fellow never had a chance to go to church. If there really was a Christian who is all alone, I am sure that God knows the circumstances.
How about you? Are you a Christian in a situation like this? I would be very interested to know why you ask.

Yes, I agree. Christians are not perfect, they\'re just forgiven. But people expect Christians to be perfect. Sad to say, not sometimes but a lot of times, Christians do behave badly and become stumbling blocks to others. Though attending church is not necessary to earn salvation as Christians are saved by grace (not by works or dos and don\'ts), it will be to their benefit if they do attend as they will be ministered by the Word as well as grow in the Word.

Christians will never be perfect in this lifetime. But it should be the goal of all Christians to grow toward perfection (Christlikeness) as they grow in the grace and knowledge of the Lord and apply His Word in our daily living (Romans 12:1-2).

Thanks for the wonderful blessing of sharing this article!

Gosh, I am saddened that it has been spread everywhere that Christians are hypocrites. By the way not the healthy men need doctor but the ill persons. Hope after attending churches there will be significant change in Christians.

To Anon,
certainly one does not NEED to go to church to be saved, to be a Christian, but we need fellowship with the body of believers to remain one. I became a Christian 30 years ago and the first thing I heard from some people is that I didn't need to go to "Church". That's a lie of the evil one. To fight the good fight, to run the good race, we need to be around other believers. there is a saying, "Don't let a bad Church steal your Salvation." and "If you want a better Pastor, pray for the one you have."
