God's Preferred Number

Probably you, as I, have a favourite number. We choose to use that number more than others because we like it best. God seems to have a number which He prefers, too.

I don't want to be so bold as to say that I know God's favorite number. I can't know God's mind at all, but I know His love. As I have read the Bible through many times from cover to cover, I have noticed that one particular number (or numeral) comes up quite often, leading me to think that it may be God's preferred number.

I have a favorite number; it has been my favorite for as long as I can remember. Since my family name begins with the eighth letter of the alphabet, and because I like the looks of the numeral "8", eight is my preferred number, even my favorite.

What about God? Do we see any preference in Scripture? Consider how many days He created and called it a perfect week. From the first book in the King James Bible to the last book, one number seems to be used more than most others. There are seven churches in the Book of the Revelation, chapter three. There are seven seals and seven trumpets in Revelation chapters four through eleven. On and on in that particular book, you find sevens such as seven angels, seven spirits, a lamb which has seven horns and seven eyes, seven mountains, seven kings and so on.

It is not only in the final book of the Bible that we find sevens. Consider the time when Joshua had his people march around Jericho before the walls fell. The walls of the town fell down when seven priests who had seven trumpets marched around the seventh time.

In Noah's great flood, he was told to bring on the ark seven each of clean animals. In Pharaoh's dream during the time Joseph was in Egypt, the seven good ears of corn and seven bad ears represented seven good years for crops followed by seven years of famine.

A Hebrew who was a servant was to serve for six years and be freed on the seventh year of service.

In the New Testament, Jesus was asked how often to forgive someone. He said we should forgive seventy times seven.

I am not saying that seven is God's favorite number although it seems to be His preferred number. What should we do about this knowledge? Probably, we should simply be aware that God loves that number a lot. We should not try to create some type of cult around the number, just as we should not create some supernatural features about other Biblical items. The burial sheet from Turin, pieces which are supposed to be parts of the original cross on which Jesus was crucified, unusual shadows which could approximate an image of Mary appearing daily on a wall, these all take way from the true message of the Bible, that God loves mankind and wants to assist everyone in their quest for Heavenly immortality.
