I'm Here Now and That's Enough

A heartfelt devotional about how we worry so much about the future, we forget to live in the moment.

Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” (Matt 6:34)

I was watching the movie ‘Shadowlands’ a few years ago, and C.S. Lewis (Anthony Hopkins) said this “I don’t want to be somewhere else anymore. Not waiting for anything new to happen, not looking around the next corner or hill. I’m here now, and that’s enough.”

Have you ever wrestled in your spirit concerning your future with God? And did you ever cry out to God, saying “use me!” Did you agonize and writhe in desperation, for fear that you might miss your destiny? Yeah. Me too.

Remember what it said in Hebrews 12:16-17 concerning Esau? It said that even though he sought the blessing he had given up with tears, he could bring about no change of mind as far as God was concerned. Ah, that verse always gets to me. I want to hold Esau, and beg God to restore him, and take pity on him. Perhaps this compassion for the ‘loser’ bubbles to the surface, because I myself am such a loser. I make stupid choices and reckless mistakes. Suffice it to say, I shed many tears in my pity parties. But the tragedy in needless worry of the future causes me to lose appreciation for the day…the moment I am presently in.

The very verse preceding the one quoted at the top of today’s devotion answers the eternal question of tomorrow’s worries. “But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Well look at that! God actually gives us the answer before the question is even asked! “Tomorrow will worry about itself,” He says. “Just seek my kingdom and my righteousness, and I’ll take care of the rest.” Did you catch that? He’ll take care of the REST! If we would just enter in to his rest, we wouldn’t have to worry about tomorrow.

All we need to do is just to love Him. Why should we worry and fret about tomorrow? God says all we need to do is seek Him. Oh, his yoke is so light, and his burden is easy. If all we have to do is love Him…that’s easy! So now we can just enjoy the day, and lose ourselves in gratitude to God, and as long as we do that, he will be faithful to write the end of our story. We can’t lift a single finger to help Him in fulfilling our destinies, all we can do, and all we were created to do, is to just love Him. We’re here now… and that’s enough. No, that’s more than enough!
