Miracle of Gethsemane

Can a man sweat blood? Does science and religion validate each other? These are just a few questions answered in the following essay.

The garden of Gethsemane on the Mount of Olives is a famous scene in the life of Jesus Christ. Whether you are a believer or not, I will try to show what Jesus was going through during this scene and then analyze whether such as event could have taken place. Throughout the Bible, the gospels, we will find multiple references to the mount of olives or the garden of Gethsemane prayer scene but one of the most interesting descriptions of the scene can be found in the book of Luke, Chapter 22 verse 44.

The Verse says, “And being in anguish, he (Jesus) prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.” The immediate reaction we will all get is "wait a second that cannot be possible." How can someone's sweat be like drops of blood falling to the ground? Well here is where science and religion unite to get the answers (who said science and religion are not compatible?). This special condition in which a person's sweat becomes like drops of blood is called Hematidrosis. According to Holoubek's article called “A classification of Hematidrosis," published in the Journal of Medicine in 1996, such a condition occurs when the person is extremely strained to the point where the person is facing his or her death.

Thus, it is perfectly plausible that Jesus Christ was experiencing Hematidrosis. One this that I want to make clear is that Hematidrosis is not a hereditary condition or any form of disease. It occurs when capillaries break and the blood mingle with sweat drops and then gets perspired through the sweat glands. This condition occurs only when the person is facing extreme anguish, physical or mental strain, sensivity or extreme levels of stress. This condition is extremely rare and one of the earliest documented cases in is the Bible with Jesus Christ.

However, the condition Hematidrosis just validates the Biblical verses about Jesus. In Luke, the verse tells us that Jesus was in anguish and praying more earnestly shows either stress or a building up of tension. With such factors combined with the fact that Jesus is the son of God send to bear all of mankind's sins and diseases to the cross for eternal salvation, it would create extreme conditions of physical and mental stress to anyone's body - especially the body of Christ. Thus, when Jesus was praying with all of this tension, stress, anxiety, pain, sorrow, anguish and all the evils of this world, this body could not handle it and the capillaries broke releasing blood with his sweat.

This is just one more example of how science validates religion, or more importantly, how science has backed the evidence found within the Bible. So going back, when you asked how a man can sweat blood, I will respond with one word - Hematidrosis. And Jesus Christ prayed for us and carried our sins on the cross and through that anguish his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground. This is the miracle of Gethsemane, on the night of his betrayal into the hands of the Gentiles and the sinners.
