Shh. Listen. Do you hear that?
Listen again.
Keep listening.
It could be, dare I say, the Voice of God.
But you might not hear it if you just kneel to ask ask ask. Or even praise praise praise. Or thank thank thank.
There's nothing wrong in asking, praising, or thanking. Nothing at all. But if it's all we do, then we're lacking something important for our souls.
“Be still and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations; I will be exalted on the earth.” Psalm 67:10
Sure, God speaks through his Word and confirms things through others, but we've got to learn to be still.
We don't like being still. In fact, we tell our children that all the time when they're fidgeting. But as we say to our children, so God says to us “Be still. Be still.”
Let's face it: city life is not conducive to being still. It's hectic, fast-paced, and often stressful. How could we possibly be still when there's so much to do and only 24 hours to do it?
And yet God says, “Be still. Be still.”
For some, it may take ten minutes to quiet the heart. For others, a half hour or longer. But it's time well spent.
Like any spiritual discipline, waiting on God doesn't come easy or without cost At first, your mind will wander to things that need to get done. You'll fret and worry and think it's all a waste of time. It isn't. Listening to the God of Creation is never ever in vain.
Like any worthwhile thing in life, if you have the desire to do something, you'll find the time and money to do it. Being still is like that, except it doesn't cost any money.
So, what can you expect to hear while waiting on God? Ah, the question that everyone wants an answer to. Perhaps He'll point out sin in your life or a relationship that needs mending. Maybe He'll just give you a day's worth of encouragement. Or perhaps - just perhaps - God just wants to spend time with you.
