There is an ultimate reason for God's commandments. The first commandment is the foundation for every Christian, Jew, and Muslim as it is the basic necessity to bond mankind together with the Holy One. Hear O' Israel, the Lord is our God, the Lord is One. The God of your life should be the One who gets the affection, the attention, the adoration, and the love. The True and Living God will connect with the person who will truly seek Him in spirit and in truth.
“I am the Lord Thy God and you shall have no other gods before Me”. This is an imperative statement and a reminder that the Holy God of Israel is the sole Eternal Entity. God wants to share and express His self through us. He is longing for our love. The name God (as in Yahweh) is holy and requires our undivided attention. Nobody is complete without God - not one.
The meaning of “no other gods…” is emphasizing the term not to put anything before the Lord. You cannot afford to personalize any material object or property and cherish it. It will become your personal idol. Other gods cannot see, hear, smell, or touch. Basically, they are the creation of our hands. They neither can satisfy one's soul nor can they give us salvation. They are mere instruments we create just to deprive the Living God from his justice.
The God of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and of their forefathers is the True and Living God that we are required to serve wholeheartedly. You can only have true worship with the only True God. True worship is here today only if you are connecting to the Almighty God, the Father. God desires your friendship. He wants to be connected to you. This connection is achieved by giving Him your time. You are asked to commune with God so that you can build a loving relationship with Him.
His presence can be felt in the atmosphere. We communicate with Him for His spiritual guidance. We should be able to taste His goodness. We must honor, worship, and glorify Him in all things. He is the only God we are to serve. Amen.
