The Gospel of Matthew

I found one part of the Gospel of Matthew particularly interesting.

For my interesting part of the Gospel of Matthew, I chose the birth of baby Jesus. I chose this part because it is such an important part of Jesus’ life, and the rest of the Gospel. In Matthew, it tells of how an angel appeared to Joseph in a dream and told him that he was going to have a son, and to name him Jesus. It also tells him that Mary is a virgin, but she will still have the baby. He tells Joseph to accept this situation and take Mary into his home. When Joseph woke up, he had faith in God and what the angel told him, so he obeyed what he had been told to do, and took Mary in.

What struck me about this passage is Joseph’s unquestioning faith in God and the messenger. He accepts what he is told without a doubt. He puts all his other feelings aside. Not too many people would do such a thing. A lot of people would probably also be very suspicious if there wife was showing signs of pregnancy, but Joseph is not.

The thing that challenges me in this passage is having faith in God no matter what happens, or what the situation is. I would find it very hard to believe what had been told to me if I was Joseph. I would have been tempted to just do what I wanted, instead of following God’s will.

What I learned in this story is that if you follow God’s will you will always be rewarded. Joseph had faith when most people would not, and as a reward he helped bring the Son of Christ into the world.
