Comparison: Jainism and Judaism

A comparison between Jainist and Hebrew people.

Religion has been an important aspect for nearly every culture. Since there are many different cultures, there are many different religions as well. Two of these religions are Judaism and Jainism. Judaism and Jainism both have very different roots. Judaism was started in Mesopotamia, while Jainism was started in India. Because of this Judaism and Jainism are very different. Judaism and Jainism are very different because of their relationship with god, what they consider moral and immoral, and the type of rituals they practice.

In Judaism the Jewish people interact directly with god, while in Jainism the Jainist people do not interact with god at all. Jewish people believe that god controls many aspects of their life. In the sacred writings of the Jewish people (called the “Tanakh”) god interacts with certain people numerous times. This shows that Jewish people obviously had a relationship with god. This is not true for the Jainist people. Jainism does not believe in god as a supreme being like Judaism does. In fact, Jainism does not even recognize whether god exists or not. Therefore Jainist people have no interaction with god at all because they simply do not recognize him in anyway.

The moral values of the Jainist people are very different than the moral values of the Jewish people. Jainist people believe that it is wrong to cause any living thing pain no matter what. Jainist people go to extreme lengths to do this by wearing face masks to not breathe in micro organisms and by becoming vegetarians so that they would not eat animals and cause them pain. Jewish people have a somewhat different view when it comes to causing pain to a living being. Jewish people believe that committing murder or intentionally harming someone is wrong. However, Jewish people believe that eating animals to survive is not immoral. This shows that Jewish people believe intentionally causing pain is morally wrong, but eating an animal to survive is not morally wrong.

Ritual plays an important role in both Judaism and Jainism, however the rituals themselves are very different. A common ritual in Judaism is making a sacrifice to god. Doing this in Judaism is very important because Jewish people believe that by doing this they will please God. The ritual practiced in Jainism is much different. In Jainism the Jainist people practice asceticism. By practicing asceticism Jainist deny themselves of everything all the way from not wearing clothes to not eating. This ritual is done because Jainist believe that when someone practices asceticism that that person cannot cause pain to any other living being and therefore that person would be a morally good person.

Judaism and Jainism are different in very many ways. They are different because of their relationship with god, what they consider moral and immoral, and the type of rituals they practice. These differences make these religions very different and very unique. However, these differences tend to lead to controversy nowadays, which has led to many problems throughout the global community. It is good that religions are different and unique, but this comes at a price.
