A Comparison of Genesis and Mayan Mythologies

Comparing the two creation stories in Genesis not only with each other, but with a Mayan creation story as well.

In the first two chapters of Genesis you find a different creation story, one for each chapter. One that can be translated as either a single creation story, with more detail later; or others translate this to mean it is in fact two creation stories in disguise.

The first chapter of Genesis talks about God who was around for an unknown period of time. He was alone in this Universe, filled with nothingness. God then decided to create a world for his enjoyment, so on the first day he created night and day. God continued to create the world one day and step at a time, waters, land, animals, and finally humans. Although it is with the creation of humans that the two chapters differ, in the 1st one it says God created male and female…in the 2nd one it talked about Adam/male being created from the dust of the Earth. Later on Eve was created out of the rib of Adam, which means that there is a curious retelling of the story.

In the Mayan creation story it comes together a little differently, this time there are two gods, with one of them being a feathered being. Much like the way it seems God brings things into existence instantaneously…and unlike the way God seems to speak things into existence, the two gods of the Mayans thought things into their existence…they think therefore it exists.

Later on comes the animals, and these gods demanded worship, unfortunately the animals could only create a cacophony of grunts, whistles, and other noises in their own language, before the gods got upset and decided to create man in order to worship them. Unfortunately he was made of wet clay and quickly fell apart. This then lead to them creating men and women out of wood, which managed to go better; but they were soulless and their lives held little meaning, and were soon killed with the survivors becoming monkeys.

Later on new humans were made from white corn gathered by animals. These four new human males were perfect, and said their praises to the two gods…unfortunately they were too perfect as they were able to see and perceive things like the gods themselves. Thus, the gods had to limit their vision, and created four females for them to be their wives.

Darwin's theory of evolution was a creation myth built upon a limited understanding of his scientific background, and that of his own studies. He believed that all life was a careful production of slow evolution, minute changes for the better, with several chain reactions. Such as a fish turning into a frog/amphibian through a slow evolutionary process, one proof of this might be the lungfish, which is a fish with working lungs of sorts.

He also believed in the term Survival of The Fittest that worked in tandem with evolution in order to weed out the weaklings of evolution in order to make more room for the superior genetic stock, such as a mountain lion killing a three-legged goat.

The Maori Tribe of New Zealand has an interesting creation story. They believed that the goddess of the Earth, Papatuanuku, and the god of sky, Ranginui, created everything, and humans were created in the darkness between their loving embrace. Unfortunately for the couple, the people within their embrace got tired of living in darkness and made their parents split apart.

The rain drops are the tears of the sky god, showing his love for her, while the goddess of the Earth shows her love, warmth, and desire for her husband by the raising mists of the forests, it also shows that she is continually nurturing mankind…despite the fact that they forced her from her husband.

With the information previously presented, I believe that it is not possible to align the creation myths aforementioned with that of Darwin's creation myth/theory in both of their entirety. However, that is not to say that Darwin's theory cannot come into union with these other mythologies in parts. I think that Darwin's theory could be at best a nice side story or add-on to the Genesis creation myth, but with the others there are a lack of parallels in my own humble opinion.

In terms of the Genesis mythologies, I tend to resonate with them both, although I feel that the first one is the most interesting. I say this as people have created an entire new mythology within that of the first chapter of Genesis to include a work about the name of the REAL first woman named Lilith, who was created by less superior stock, and was quite adamant about not being treated as an inferior. She went so far as run away when Adam tried to make her obedient and make love to him as a submissive underneath him, quite literally.
