Solomon's Proverbs

Looking at the proverbs that deal with anger.

Solomon gave us many different useful proverbs, in the book of Proverbs, that can still be applied today. Many of them are repetitive such as “people who accept correction are on the pathway to life, but those who ignore it will lead others astray,” Solomon gave us many different useful proverbs, in the book of Proverbs, that can still be applied today. Many of them are repetitive such as “people who accept correction are on the pathway to life, but those who ignore it will lead others astray,” Proverbs 10:17. His proverbs are meant to help us live our lives according to the way God intended. He wants us to have the wisdom needed to do so.

There are at least two proverbs that focus on anger:

“A fool is quick-tempered, but a wise person stays calm when insulted” 12:16

“Those who control their anger have great understanding; those with a hasty temper will make mistakes” 14:29

A person cannot be quick to anger, because their anger can cloud judgments and cause a situation far worse than the one already present. A wise man is calm and can see various ways out of the situation and avoiding conflict. God wants us to avoid conflict and handle things in a wise manner. Wise men think before taking action, but anger cause them to see only one thing.

A person cannot be quick to anger. If they are then they will not be able to use the best judgment when making a decision. A fool, as the proverb says, is quick to see red, while a wise person will stand back and remain calm, giving him the upper hand. If one controls their anger then they have enough wisdom to know how to handle the situation rather than getting angry and causing a fight which will only make matters worse.

As Christians we cannot be quick tempered, we need to hold our tongues and have the wisdom to react to the situation in a Christ-like manner. Solomon knew that anger can cloud judgment and cause us to make grave mistakes, which would make us fools and not wise as he was. Although a person may insult us, our family, or even our faith, we need to be calm and collected. Those who try to bring us down will be discouraged by our wisdom.

Take a lesson from Solomon’s words, cool your temper and you’ll find greater understanding of the situation. Don’t let anger control the person you are, let your wisdom help you find a better way to handle anger and not cause the situation to get worse. Anger can only destroy us, wisdom builds us up and gives a greater insight.
